Baker City’s community Christmas tree, which will be lighted on the evening of Saturday, Dec. 7, is a native — and not just because, as usual, it was cut from a Baker City property. The 30-foot grand fir, donated by David McCoy, was originally a seedling growing in a nearby forest. McCoy’s wife, Pat, who died in 2012, planted the tree on their 20th Street property about 40 years ago.

Erin and Garrett Nelson of Baker City will remember this Thanksgiving like no other before. The holiday arrives less than three months after Erin sustained life-threatening injuries when a driver racing with another driver sideswiped the Jeep she was driving on Interstate 84 near Caldwell, Idaho, causing the Jeep to careen off the freeway and roll multiple times. After undergoing surgery to remove a chunk of her skull blocking a vital vein, Erin returned to the couple’s Baker City home in late October and continues to recuperate.
