The chair of the Baker County Democrats says around 40 yard signs supporting the Democratic presidential ticket of Kamala Harris and Tim Walz have been stolen or vandalized in the county over the past month or so.

Jeanie Zebrak of Baker City said Baker County Democrats bought 150 signs for $250.

She started handing out signs in early September, distributing 120 to 130 signs, and since then has heard from residents whose signs were taken or damaged.

About one-third of the signs have been targeted, she said.

“It’s pretty disappointing,” Zebrak said.

She contends that tampering with campaign signs is a form of “voter suppression.”

Zebrak said about 10 to 15 of the signs were in Baker City yards.

Signs also were removed or vandalized in Richland and Halfway, she said.

Zebrak said she is checking with residents whose signs were taken or damaged to see if any had doorbell cameras or other videos. If there are any videos with usable evidence, such as a suspect or license plate, Zebrak said she will take the information to the Baker County Sheriff’s Office and district attorney.

Zebrak said people, despite their political disagreements, should be able to place signs on their property without worrying that they will be damaged or stolen.

“People should be able to get along,” she said.

Zebrak said she has friends who are Republicans and would never consider interfering with their signs if they chose to display them.

Robin Crowell, who has a Harris/Walz sign, said part of the sign appeared to have been burned on the night of Oct. 14-15.

Danny Johnson, chair of the Baker County Republicans, said he’s heard of one Trump/Vance sign being taken from a Baker City yard.

Johnson said the bigger issue for the GOP has been meeting the demand for signs for the Republican ticket.
