New month, same old weather.

Unseasonably warm weather, to be specific.

October’s first week has followed the trend that started in Baker City in July.

The high temperature was above average for each of the first six days of October at the Baker City Airport.

And the National Weather Service is forecasting above average temperatures at least through Oct. 12, as a persistent high pressure ridge maintains mostly sunny days.

October’s balmy beginning follows the third-hottest September on record at the airport, an August that was nearly 6 degrees hotter than average, and a July that was the hottest month at the airport, where temperature records date to 1943.

High temperatures in October have ranged from 72 on the 2nd to 86 on the 4th.

The latter temperature tied the record high for the date, set in 1993.

The high of 83 on Oct. 6 was 4 degrees off the record of 87 set in 1980.

The high of 84 on Monday, Oct. 7, tied the daily record set in 1980. The forecast high of 84 on Tuesday, Oct. 8, would fall just short of the daily record of 85, set in 1988.

The average highs for the first 10 days of October range from 65 to 71.

Although October days have been unusually mild, mornings have been closer to average, as the lack of clouds and low humidities have allowed temperatures to dip to the upper 20s and low 30s each day.

The low was slightly below average each of the first six days.

The weather pattern has also resulted in abnormally wide daily temperature ranges. On Oct. 4 the high was 86 and the low was 29, a difference of 57 degrees.

Daily ranges exceeding 55 degrees are relatively rare at the airport.
