The annual Color Run at Baker High School has been renamed to honor the Loza family. Two of Gisell and Geovanny Loza’s sons, Ricky and Leonardo, have died of health issues in the past two years. The Oct. 2 event raised money for the family.

Staci Erickson, director of the Baker County Juvenile Department, told county commissioners on Oct. 2 that she’s concerned about an increase in 2024 in the number of juvenile crime charges, as well as the younger ages of some of those accused.

An Oregon judge ordered that a Baker City man, Michael Scott Tugman, be released from prison because Gov. Tina Kotek’s decision in March 2024 to revoke the commutation that Kotek’s predecessor, Kate Brown, granted to Tugman while he was in prison during the pandemic violated his constitutional rights.
