A little more than a month after a fire, which is still under investigation, gutted the historic Central Building in Baker City, formerly Baker High School, the school district has hired a contractor to demolish the building. The work is slated to start July 8 and will take about seven weeks.

After a relatively cool and damp spring, June turned hot and dry, leading to a significant increase in the wildfire risk in Northeastern Oregon. The conditions, combined with a rash of human-caused fires across the region the last week of the month, concern fire managers from local, state and federal agencies tasked with fighting blazes.
