Trees hang over the Powder River in Baker City near Washington Avenue. A group of volunteers plans to trim overhanging limbs on June 26, 2024, between Bridge and D streets, and possibly north beyond D Street.

A group of volunteers led by Anthony Lakes, The Trailhead and Quail Ridge Golf course plan to trim trees and brush along the Powder River through Baker City on Wednesday, June 26, to clear a path for people to float the river, a popular summer pastime.

Matt Baldwin, base operations and risk manager for Anthony Lakes Outdoor Recreation Association, said the volunteers, along with Anthony from Tony’s Tree Service, which will use a chipper to process the limbs, will work on the river from Bridge Street north to D Street, and possibly beyond.

“We will be pulling trash and limbing brush and trees to create an easy floating experience with the summer heat upon us,” Baldwin said.

The Powder is running at a moderate volume now, about 110 cubic feet per second.

The river typically rises to above 200 cfs at times during the summer to meet the demand from farmers and ranchers downstream.
