Thank you, Councilman Larry Pearson, for requesting our city manager to explore the addition of a Baker City gasoline tax to our November ballot at our last city council meeting.

Baker City is strategically located at the crossroads of several Oregon highways and an interstate, that’s over an hour from the nearest fuel stops in La Grande or Ontario. This presents a unique opportunity to implement a city gasoline tax, particularly with the recent developments such as the new Love’s Travel Center, the new Maverik station at Exit 302 (Highway 86), the reactivation of Albertsons 12-pump gas station, and the reconstruction of the Jackson Chevron station in historic downtown.

Implementing a 4-cents-per-gallon gasoline tax, aligning with the average rate in Oregon, could significantly enhance Baker City’s street fund budget. This tax is projected to generate substantial revenue by leveraging the daily I-84 traffic of approximately 12,280 vehicles between Baker City exits 302 and 304, as reported by the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT). The implementation will adhere to the guidelines outlined in Oregon State Law HB 2001, section 27, detailing the requirements for gas tax passage.

For instance, Valley Avenue, from Resort to East Street, is an eyesore that hasn’t been paved/serviced in over a decade. What a shame the city has let it go to seed, considering it’s a gateway street to our historic district, Leo’s greenbelt, Central Park, and our Farmers Market. The sidewalks are broken, and the bridge needs serious maintenance.

This initiative not only capitalizes on Baker City’s aesthetics and growing infrastructure but also provides a sustainable revenue stream for BC Public Works road development and maintenance projects, enhancing the community’s overall economic resilience.

Please vote yes when the time comes. Let’s give Baker City a great 150th birthday present by improving our streets, bridges, and sidewalks!
