Wildfire controlled near Huntington

Lightning is the suspected cause for several wildfires over the weekend in the southeast corner of Baker County.

All were controlled as of June 10.

The largest, the Benson Creek fire, was reported about 4 p.m. on June 9 about 2 miles southwest of Huntington.

The fire, which burned 470 acres of rangeland, was contained the morning of June 10, with no visible flames at that time, said Larisa Bogardus, public information officer for the BLM’’s Vale District.

One bulldozer, two 20-person Snake River Valley hand crews, the Vale Hotshots and five fire engines were assigned to the fire, Bogardus said.

The Burnt River Rangeland Fire Protection District contained a fire near Ayers Creek, north of Durkee, at 1 acre. The fire was reported about 7:20 p.m. on June 9.

The Chicken Creek fire, reported at 12:27 p.m. on June 9, burned 3 acres about 3 miles southwest of Huntington.

The Birch Creek fire, about 6 miles southeast of Huntington, burned about 1.6 acres. It was reported just after midnight on June 9.

The Rye Valley fire, about 8 miles northwest of Huntington, was reported late on June 6. It burned about 43 acres and was controlled at 3 p.m. on June 9.

The Vale Hotshots responded to the fire, as did a helicopter dropping water.
