- Ruth Frieboes of North Powder talks about the five amputation surgeries she has undergone for her right leg since 2012.
Ruth Frieboes suffered for nearly a dozen years with a nerve condition that necessitated four amputation surgeries on her right leg. Her prosthetics didn’t fit well and she had nearly constant pain. When a prosthetist suggested that she needed a fifth surgery, Frieboes, who has lived in North Powder since 1977, contemplated a future confined to a wheelchair or to using crutches. But then she learned about a revolutionary new surgery in which a prosthetic limb is attached to an anchor implanted in the remnant bone. She was the first Pacific Northwest resident to undergo the surgery, and since the procedure on Dec. 27, 2023, in Portland, she has regained a level of mobility missing since her first surgery in 2012.

Baker County District Attorney Greg Baxter and Baker City Police Chief Ty Duby say they agree that students who make threats about shooting or bombing a school — even if the threat is a joke or prank — should face punishment, including detention at a juvenile facility in The Dalles. The two officials discussed the situation after a May 9 event in which a Baker High School student was suspended, and cited for disorderly conduct, for a social media post.
