- Ethan Fletcher, seen here against La Grande on April 3, 2024, drew a bases-loaded walk to drive in the game-winning run in a Class 4A play-in game May 17, 2024, at Marshfield.
Baker’s baseball team capped its regular season by sweeping Ontario in a doubleheader on Friday, May 10, at Ontario, clinching third place in the Greater Oregon League and earning a Class 4A play-in game.
Baker’s opponent, and the game date and time, haven’t been set.
The 12-10, 8-3 sweep of the Tigers avenged a split with Ontario on April 19.
Baker enters the postseason having won four of its last six games.
“We played pretty well,” coach Tim Smith said after the sweep at Ontario. “Jake McClaughry and Jaxon Logsdon threw well again. Our defense was very good, our bats were a little quiet but we battled tough and got it done.”
Game one
The opener was back and forth, as Baker led 2-0 early, then rallied after Ontario led 3-2 after four innings.
McClaughry started on the mound and went 5.1 innings, striking out seven. Will O’Connell pitched an inning of relief, and Logan Crawford .2 of an inning.
McClaughry drove in O’Connell in the first inning, and Cole Richards drove in Sage Joseph in the second as Baker led 2-0.
After Ontario led 3-2, Baker scored four runs in the top of the fifth to take the lead for good at 6-3.
Cole Richards tripled and scored on Colby Capon’s hit. O’Connell, Logsdon and Ethan Fletcher each hit a double.
The Tigers cut the lead to a single run at 7-6 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth.
But Baker responded with five runs in the top of the seventh, as Fletcher, Cole Richards, John Garcia and Joseph all scored, and O’Connell had another double as the Bulldogs led 12-6.
Ontario rallied with four runs in the bottom of the seventh, but the rally fell short.
Game two
Baker led from the start, scoring twice in the first as Logsdon doubled and was driven home by Fletcher’s hit. Fletcher then stole home.
Logsdon started on the mound and dominated the Tigers, striking out 11 in 5.2 innings and shutting out Ontario for five innings before giving way to Capon to close out the sixth. Crawford pitched the seventh inning.
Baker boosted its lead to 4-0 in the fourth, and to 5-0 on Fletcher’s RBI double in the sixth.
Baker added three more runs in the seventh as O’Connell, Aldo Duran and Logsdon all scored.
“Logan Crawford did excellent in pressure relief situations, he threw strikes and trusted our defense,” Smith said. “Will O’Connell had a great day at the plate for us.”
