Editor’s note: This is a letter the author submitted to Baker City Mayor Randy Daugherty.
I’ve been reading about the proposed odor ordinance, prompted by a neighbor who does not like the smell of marijuana, and I wonder how this will play out.
There are a lot of offensive smells in the valley: burning leaves, slash burning, asphalt paving, cigarette smoke, mint, manure spray on crops, diesel vehicles, roasting coffee. How will the council respond when someone complains about these everyday odors? Or, might this just be about resistance to marijuana?
Are you ready for what comes next should an odor ordinance pass? How about a sight ordinance? Maybe I don’t like the sight of the cars parked in my neighbor’s drive. Maybe my neighbor doesn’t like the sight of me in my grubby clothes working in the yard.
Please be honest with yourselves and reconsider the odor ordinance idea.
