People driving Pocahontas Road near Marble Creek in Baker Valley might be surprised when they see the cattle grazing in pastures near the road.
Cattle are commonplace in the valley, of course.
But these aren’t ordinary cattle.
Dan and Eva Henes raise Scottish Highland cattle on their Old Souls Farm. The breed has distinctive shaggy hair — although they shed much of their winter coat.

Gissel and Geovanny Loza have had a tumultuous past few years, losing one of their five children to a brain disorder and helping another through a battle with leukemia. Ricky Loza, who turns 15 soon, recently had his second stem cell transplant to combat leukemia and the effects of chemotherapy. Gissel said her son hopes to return to Baker High School, where he will be a sophomore, this fall.

A Washington woman arrested April 21 near Durkee after trying to elude a state trooper while she was driving a moving truck with one flat tire pleaded guilty to drunken driving and eluding charges on May 1. She now faces charges for driving through a stop sign in Hermiston and crashing into a car driven by a Baker High School graduate on April 19.

The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is trying a new tactic in its decade-long battle to reduce the population of yellow perch in Phillips Reservoir. The predominance of the fish has crowded out rainbow trout and stunted the average size of the perch.
