Officials from several small, volunteer fire protection districts in Northeast Oregon, including Baker County, are concerned about the potential effects of proposed federal rules designed to protect firefighters. A Vale man who pleaded no contest to three charges related to the fatal shooting of a woman in Baker City in January 2020 will have a chance to withdraw that plea, made in 2021. If he withdraws his plea, he could be prosecuted on charges that were dropped as part of the 2021 plea agreement.
