This last Saturday, April 12th, the Baker Middle School softball team traveled to Fruitland, Idaho and played Parma, New Plymouth and the local Grizzlies team in a tournament bout.
Assistant coach Brandi Sangster says that the team was a bit short handed, but still managed to claim a win and came close in the final game as well.
Game One: Parma 15 – Baker 2
“We had a tough battle in the first game against Parma and didn’t come out on top,” said Sangster.
“Jocelyn Rayl and Grace Radabaugh both drove in a run for the Bulldogs, Claire Collier pitched, she allowed 7 hits, walked 6 but struck out 7,” said Sangster.
“Hannah Sullivan went 2-2 with a triple and a run scored and a stolen base, Bailey Sangster went 1-2 with a run scored and a stolen base. Paityn Barr had one stolen base,” she said.
Game Two: Baker 11 – New Plymouth 6
“In the 2nd game against New Plymouth, we took the win,” said Sangster. “Sadie Christense was the winning pitcher, she gave up 2 hits and 2 earned runs over 3 innings. She had 6 strikeouts.”
“Sadie Christensen went 1-2 and had one RBI, Romie Spooner, Kyra Cheren and Teala Morris each drove in one run for the Bulldogs,” she said.
“We had a good eye at the plate in this game, drawing 13 walks as a team,” said Sangster.
Gabby Solis, Claira Slater, Makenzie Dennis and Ilah Eisiminger each scored 2 runs for the bulldogs.
Game 3: Fruitland 16 – Baker 13
“In game 3, we just ran out of time. We out-hit the Fruitland Grizzlies, 11 to 6,” said Sangster, “the drop-dead time limit hit us hard as we were on a comeback. We lost 13-16.”
Bailey Sangster was in the circle, giving up 6 hits and 6 earned runs.
“We gave up some timely walks and six errors that really hurt us”, said coach Nathan Rayl.
“We hit the ball very well but couldn’t string enough hits together at the right time to pull off the win. The game was a fun one to watch as the girls had some great plays, we just didn’t finish”, he said.
“Hannah Sullivan went 3-3 with a homerun, her first of her middle school career. She absolutely smoked the ball, you can quote me on that one, it was awesome,” said Sangster.
Claire Collier went 2-3 with a triple, 2 RBIs and 3 runs scored. Makenzie Dennis went 2-2 with 2 RBIs.
Jocelyn Rayl went 1-2 with 2 runs scored, Bailey Sangster went 1-3 with 2 runs scored. Romie Spooner went 1-3 with a double, 2 RBIS and a run scored.
Hannah Sullivan, Makenzie Dennis, and Bailey Sangster each had 2 stolen bases.
