BAKER TRACK AND FIELD: Rasean Jones breaks school record in 300-meter hurdles — twice

Published 6:00 am Wednesday, April 10, 2024

GRESHAM — Baker sophomore hurdler Rasean Jones’ school record in the 300-meter race didn’t last long.

And he has only himself to blame.

On Saturday, April 13, four days after he broke the 51-year-old record, Jones bested his previous time at the Centennial Invitational in Gresham.

Jones, who won both the 110-meter and 300-meter hurdles races at the Class 4A state meet last May as a freshman, won the 300-meter event at Centennial, in Gresham, in 38.10 seconds. That bested his 38.49-second run in a meet April 9 at Vale, where he broke the BHS record of 39.38 seconds set by Dave Staab in 1973.

Jones also won the 110-meter high hurdles at the Centennial meet, in 14.6 seconds. That tied Baker’s school record. He has the fastest times in both races for all Oregon high school athletes this season.

Jones said that though it’s still relatively early in the season — and he got a late start, as a member of Baker’s state championship basketball team that finished its season March 9 — he feels like he’s in good shape and that his technique, which is crucial in hurdles races, is coming into form.

“I can still get in better shape,” he said. “I’m just hoping that over the season I can improve.”

He said that though he doesn’t set specific time goals, he was well aware of the BHS records.

“Before my freshman year I took a picture of the record board,” he said, referring to the wooden display outside the BHS gym that lists school track and field records.

Those standards serve as motivation, Jones said.

“I don’t set too many goals for myself, I just try to do the work and to do my best,” he said.

Jones said that although he tied the school record in the 110-meter race at Centennial with a time of 14.60 seconds, it “wasn’t the prettiest race I’ve run.”

Jones ran a 14.63 in the event at Vale on April 9.

He said he’s looking forward to competing in the Oregon Relays on Friday and Saturday, April 19 and 20, at Hayward Field on the University of Oregon campus — the same track where he won the two state championships last year.

Baker, which competed with a partial team at Centennial (some Bulldogs competed in the La Grande Invitational the same day), placed third in the boys meet behind Class 5A schools Centennial and Parkrose.

Baker junior Jaron Long won the 800-meter race with a personal best time of 1:59.45. Long and Jones also ran legs for the Baker team that won the 4×400 relay. The other team members are Lance Downing and Malaki Myer. The relay team will also compete at the Oregon Relays this weekend.

Daniel Brown was second in both the 1,500-meter and 3,000-meter races, setting season bests in both races and coming close to his personal records, Baker coach Suzy Cole said.

Dillon Multop set a personal record in the shot put, finishing fifth. Cole said freshmen Kane Hellberg and Quin Wellman had strong meets. Wellman had personal bests in the shot put and discus, and Hellberg “jumped great” in the long jump and triple jump, Cole said.

Baker finished fifth in the girls meet. Meren Jesenko was second in the 300 hurdles, and Sara Ruiz was second in the 200.

“Meren Jesenko had a great race in the 300 hurdles, breaking the 50-second barrier,” Cole said.

APRIL 9 AT ONTARIO

ONTARIO — Baker’s boys and girls track and field teams, competing for the first time in three weeks, placed second in a three-way meet against Vale and Ontario on Tuesday, April 9.

Vale finished first in the boys and girls meets.

Baker had multiple individual winners, including sophomore Rasean Jones, who swept the boys hurdles races and broke a BHS record in the process.

The sophomore’s time of 38.49 broke the 41-year-old record of 39.38 set by Dave Staab in 1973.

Jones, who won both hurdles races at the Class 4A state meet in May 2023, ran the 300 in 39.74 at that event. Jones also nearly set a second school record, just .03 of a second off the BHS record in the 110 hurdles with a time of 14.63 seconds. Just two other runners competed in the race.

Baker coach Suzy Cole noted that several other Bulldogs set personal records.

“Our kids did amazing,” Cole said. “Space Handy in the 100 and 200, Giacomo Rigueiro ran a beautiful 400 by himself with a best time of 52.34, Daniel Brown ran a killer workout of 1,500, 800, 400 4×400 and running tougher each race.

“Jaron Long was back for his first meet and ran an amazing 800 in the time of 2:01.29, Gabe Schwartz ran a really solid 1,500,” Cole said. “The 4×400 team of Rasean, Jaron Long, Giacomco and Malaki Myer ran 3:31.”

Dillon Multop set a personal record by nine feet in the shot put, placing third. Mulltop placed second in the discus.

Quin Wellman was third in the discus with a personal best by 11 feet.

“On the girls side, Claire Bachman ran a personal best in the 400,” Cole said. “Meren Jesenko ran two great hurdle races, PRing in both the highs and lows, she was more than second faster in the lows. Gracie Spike had a 5-foot PR in the discus and a 2.50-foot PR in the javelin.”

“We were very excited about the results and the position we are in for this time of the season,” Cole said.

Other individual winners included Rigueiro in the 400 meters, Long in the 800 meters, Baker’s 4×400 relay team of Jones, Rigueiro, Long and Malaki Myer, and Reeve Damschen in the pole vault.

In the girls meet, Baker’s Ryann Paulsen won both the javelin and shot put throws. Emma Timm won the 800-meter race, Meren Jesenko won the 300-meter hurdles, Baker won the 4×100 relay with a team of Claire Bachman, Kayla Coley, Kyndal Chandler and Sara Ruiz, and Sofie Kaaen won the pole vault.
