The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife is working with a federal agency to kill ravens and destroy their nests in an area east of Baker City with a goal of helping sage grouse rebound from a significant population decline over the past two decades. ODFW officials cite research from Nevada showing that lowering raven densities can help sage grouse, since ravens eat sage grouse eggs and chicks.

U.S. Rep. Cliff Bentz hosted a public event in Pendleton on April 4 to hear from constituents about the effects of wolves, particularly attacks on livestock. Bentz, a Republican from Ontario, believes the federal government should remove wolves from the endangered species list, giving ranchers more options, including killing wolves that repeatedly attack livestock. Currently, wolves in the western two-thirds of Oregon are federally protected.

Baker County commissioners took a step toward accomplishing a goal that has been in the works for several years — connecting the county-owned Hewitt and Holcomb parks, on Brownlee Reservoir in eastern Baker County, to the city of Richland’s water system. The parks, which are popular with campers, anglers and boaters, now use well water with a high iron content that can affect the water’s taste and stain clothes. The county still needs to secure grants to pay for the project, which is estimated to cost $1.6 million.
