A 37-year-old Wallowa man died in an avalanche while backcountry skiing in the Elkhorn Mountains near Anthony Lake on March 6. Nicholas Scott Burks and his companion were experienced backcountry skiers, and both had avalanche beacons as well as backpack-carried air bags that deploy during an avalanche and can prevent a skier from becoming buried. Burks’ air bag worked, but he suffered fatal injuries when he was caught up in the avalanche on a steep, rocky slope on the north side of Gunsight Mountain.
