Baker High School’s mock trial team showed off its abilities in cross examinations, opening and closing arguments and other aspects of a criminal trial while winning a district competition against La Grande High School and qualifying for the state competition March 16-17 in Portland.

The two finalists to replace Erin Lair as superintendent of the Baker 5J School District met with about 50 local residents during a public event Feb. 28 at the Baker High School library. The school board plans to pick either Casey Hallgarth or Kristina Wonderly during the board’s March 5 meeting.

Baker County commissioners are moving ahead with a proposal to increase the county’s lodging tax from 7% to 9%. Guests at motels, bed and breakfasts, vacation rentals and other lodging businesses pay the tax as a rate of the rental rate.
