SCAPPOOSE — Three Baker/Powder Valley girls wrestlers qualified for the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A state tournament by finishing in the top four at the Special District 1 tournament Friday and Saturday, Feb. 16-17.

The state tournament is Feb. 22-24 at Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Portland.

“So this was a pretty tough tournament, a lot of tough girls there, we took eight girls and qualified three for the state tournament, which is great,” coach Josh Anderson said.

Junior Marli Lind advanced to the championship match at 155 pounds, losing 6-1 to La Grande’s Kaitlin Brock.

“She’s been working hard and trying to get her offensive game improved all year long and it’s showing,” Anderson said of Lind, who placed second in the state in 2023.

Freshman Tessa Garrick, at 105, rebounded from a loss in her opening match to win four straight matches, including avenging the first loss to Lacatia Mason of Four Rivers, pinning Mason in the third-place match.

“She’s a super strong girl and listens really well and works hard,” Anderson said of Garrick, who joined the team the first week of practice. “She’s been winning about 50/50 from the middle of the year on, and now in the last tournament and this tournament I think she’s turned a corner.”

In the third place match against Mason, Garrick was trailing by 12 points, in danger of losing by technical fall, but she pinned Mason to win the match.

Junior Lilly Collins placed fourth at 135.

Collins had to win two overtime matches to qualify for state.

“She gutted it out, she’s a tough girl and fought to the end,” Anderson said of Collins. “She won out of willpower and grit in overtime in two matches. It got her into the third place match.”

Junior Oakley Anderson, who won the state title at 170 last year, just missed qualifying to defend her championship.

After pinning her first two opponents, Anderson lost two matches, each by a single point, the first in an overtime tiebreaker.

She had to forfeit the fifth-place match, which was for a berth at state, due to a medical issue.
