St. Stephen's Episcopal Church in Baker City, which celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2023, will host a Shrove Tuesday pancake dinner on Feb. 13, 2024.

St. Stephen’s Episcopal Church has served pancakes, ham and more on Shrove Tuesday for more than 60 years, and the next event is Feb. 13 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the church, 2177 First St.

The cost is $5 for adults, $1.50 for children or $12 for a family.

The entire congregation helps prepare and serve the food, and diners come from across the community.

“It’s always fun. It’s always wonderful,” said Aletha Bonebrake, a member of the church.

Shrove Tuesday is the day before Ash Wednesday and the beginning of Lent. Also known as Fat Tuesday, Pancake Day or Mardi Gras, Shrove Tuesday dates to the 16th century and was the time to use up the rich foods that weren’t part of the strict Lenten diet, according to Christianity.com.

Although this St. Stephen’s tradition has happened for more than six decades, the church itself is much older — it celebrated its 150th year in 2023. Bonebrake said it is the oldest church that has been in continuous service in Eastern Oregon.
