CANYON CITY — The Baker/Powder Valley girls wrestling team competed in a tournament at Grant Union High School on Friday, Jan. 19.
The Bulldogs had three individual champions — Neva Lynch, Lilly Collins and Marli Lind.
“The team did amazing this weekend,” coach Josh Anderson said. “Marli Lind continues to improve in areas where she was getting beat earlier in the season. She is really solid in all positions and that is due to her good work ethic and commitment to working on little things that improve her wrestling.”
Lind won the unofficial Class 1A state title as well.
Anderson said Collins had her “best performance of the season.”
“She put in lots of time shooting and finishing this week and it shows in her dominance in her feet,” he said. “She was also tough on offense getting three pins at the tournament.
“Neva Lynch, as a freshman, was wrestling as good as I’ve seen her wrestle all year,” Anderson said. “She hasn’t had a lot of matches this year and it was neat to see her improving and believing in herself. She pinned all of her opponents and it’s great to see her confidence improve.”
The Bulldogs had a newcomer at Grant Union, as freshman Chloe Anderson joined the team.
“She had her first ever match of the year and I was proud of her for working at practice and for being brave and wrestling a tough competitor in her first ever match,” coach Anderson said. “As she continues to work hard I’m confident she will do well.”
Baker will travel to La Grande on Tuesday, Jan. 23 for a jamboree with four or five other teams starting at 5 p.m., then travel to Hood River for a large tournamen tthis weekend.
“That will give us a good look at how we match up against some Oregon teams we don’t get to see until now,” Anderson said. “We’ve had some injuries and are missing in some spots so hopefully we can get healthy for the last month of the season.”
Anderson said he is disappointed that the team didn’t have a home meet this season.
“I wish we could because of how hard the girls have worked and all the sacrifice parents and families have made for these girls,” Anderson said. “They are doing so well and would love to wrestle in front of our Baker supporters.”
