The Baker Food Co-op has received a $15,000 grant from the Ash Grove Foundation to help renovate the historic building and sidewalks.
The Oregon Trail Preservation Trust applied for the grant on behalf of the co-op.
The co-op occupies a century-old building at 2008 Broadway St. This grant will support the first phase of the project to replace a section of the original, crumbling sidewalk along the east side of the building on First Street.
The project still needs about $5,000 and donations are welcome, said Cheri Smith, a member of the co-op.
The building has many original historic elements and renovations will retain these while meeting energy and accessibility goals. In addition to the sidewalk, the store plans to repair and update windows, re-paint exterior elements and update HVAC systems.
“We are so excited to move forward with this much needed sidewalk repair portion of the renovation project,” Smith said. “This historic building is providing a vital service to residents and visitors, and it is critical that we honor our past by keeping our patrons safe while preserving this piece of history. This grant from the Ash Grove Foundation through the Oregon Trail Preservation Trust is a critical first step and we are very appreciative.”
The Baker Food Co-op is partnering with Oregon Trail Preservation Trust on fundraising efforts. The trust is a 501c3 organization that assists with heritage related projects in Eastern Oregon.
The community responds
The Baker Food Co-op has a 45-year history of providing organic, local and bulk foods for the community.
But just a year ago, in January 2023, the co-op was facing closure due to a variety of circumstances. But then the community responded with support.
“They stepped up,” Smith said. “We appreciate our community and membership.”
A member-owned company, it is operated by a small staff and many volunteers, currently with over 1,200 members. A membership is not required to shop.
The co-op is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday. Find updates on the Facebook page.
