REDMOND — The Baker boys wrestling team placed first in the Classic Cup event at the Oregon Classic tournament on Saturday, Jan. 13, beating Ashland and Caldera in duals. The Bulldogs were the only BHS athletes to compete during the weekend, as a winter storm canceled other events.

Baker coach Jeris Stephens said he had canceled the trip earlier in the week but then learned from district officials that the Bulldogs were going after all.

During the drive, the bus driver had to stop near Dixie Summit to clean ice from the windshield wipers, and the bus was mired in snow for about 90 minutes, Stephens said.

He said about 25 of the teams scheduled to compete at Redmond didn’t make it, which resulted in changes to the bracket.

Baker ended up wrestling two larger schools, Class 5A Ashland and Caldera, the latter from Bend, on Saturday. The Bulldogs won both matches, including sweeping the three upper weight classes.

“Really exciting matches, big kudos to the 190 and up, Xander Rexroad, Russell Walden and Andrew Sandberg all won their matches,” Stephens said. “Xander winning sealed the wins for us against Caldera, and the other two were just icing on the cake, they all wrestled really, really well,” he said.

The Bulldogs’ weather-related travails weren’t quite over, though.

The team stayed Saturday night as snow continued, but on Sunday the bus driver needed to have a mechanic unthaw the diesel, which had gelled in the sub-zero temperatures, Stephens said. The bus was on the road by 1 p.m.

Baker has its lone home dual on Thursday, Jan. 18 against La Grande, with both boys and girls teams taking on the rival Tigers. Wrestling starts at 5 p.m. at Baker High School.

“We’d like to have everyone come out in support this Thursday against La Grande,” Stephens said.

Both boys and girls teams will travel to John Day on Friday, Jan. 19 for a tournament.
