Baker Tech expands space, services

Ben Arvat has changed his business quite a bit, including a new name, new location and expanded services.

His shop is now Baker Tech. It’s still located inside the Baker Tower, at 1705 Main St., but it occupies a larger space that is accessed from the Auburn Avenue door.

Cellphone repair is still a large part of his business, but he also sells laptops, builds gaming computers, stocks phone accessories, and has a few game systems and other unique technology gadgets.

“A little of everything for everybody,” he said.

Arvat has about 20 years of experience with cellphones. He previously worked for Cricket, Sprint and Verizon, and started a repair service out of his home in 2020.

He opened his retail store on Sept. 12, 2022, in a smaller space at Baker Tower. When he started adding inventory, he moved across the hall to a larger room.

Arvat offers pre-paid cell service with T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T, and he was recently approved as a re-seller for Spectrum’s internet service.

“Out of 75 stores that applied nationally, only 16 got approved,” he said.

This way, he said, he can offer in-person help with Spectrum questions.

“You have a face to the service,” he said. “I’m the liaison between the end user and technology.”

He’s also been approved as an Apple independent repair partner after a lengthy application process.

“That took me six months,” he said.

In addition to knowledge about cell phones — both Apple and Android systems — Arvat knows his way around computers.

“I started building PCs with my brother when I was 13 years old,” he said. “I like to take things apart. That’s the kid in me.”

He recently built a computer tower with transparent sides to see the inner workings and fancy lights.

“It’s like an adult lava lamp,” he said with a smile.

He’s happy to talk about his offerings too, such as the

gaming cockpit with three screens.

“I enjoy educating people and talking about my passion,” he said.
