The past few years have been difficult for the Loza family, who live between Baker City and Haines. One of Geovanny and Gissel Loza’s five children, Leonardo, died in June 2023 after suffering a series of strokes over the previous two years. Another son, Ricardo, was diagnosed with leukemia in 2022 and, after improving following a bone marrow transplant from his younger brother, Bernardo, Ricardo needs a second transplant after a relapse. The family is grateful for the support of the community, including several recent fundraisers.

With the first significant snowstorm of the season arriving on the last day of November, Oregon legislative leaders said they have pledged to bolster the Oregon Department of Transportation’s budget to ensure that reductions in snowplowing and other maintenance this winter on many highways in Eastern Oregon won’t be necessary.

A widespread power outage, caused by a fault on an Idaho Power Company transmission line between Baker City and Huntington, cut the power to more than 10,000 Oregon Trail Electric Cooperative meters, including all of Baker City, for about three hours on the chilly morning of Nov. 26, when temperatures dipped to the teens.
