It’s been nearly three months since Saint Alphonsus Health System closed the birth center at the Baker City hospital, but the effects are just beginning for some local woman who are nearing their due dates. A few of these women talked to the Herald about their concerns, particularly the potential for winter weather to close Interstate 84, the main route to the nearest maternity wards in La Grande, Ontario and the Boise area.

Baker City’s community Christmas tree has been selected. It’s a blue spruce growing on the north side of Campbell Street near Cedar Street, donated by O’Reilly Auto Parts. The tree will be cut on Nov. 22 and moved to its traditional spot in the Court Street Plaza, where it will be lighted after the Christmas parade on Dec. 2.

The Baker City Council voted on Nov. 14 to temporarily suspend the public safety fee that took effect Oct. 1. Councilors want to give the public a chance to comment on the fee, and also to craft rules dealing with how the fee is assessed on certain properties.

Baker School District superintendent Erin Lair announced on Nov. 14 that she will resign on June 30, 2024. Lair, a Baker High School graduate, has been superintendent since July 1, 2022.
