The U.S. Postal Service is making progress on alleviating a shortage of mail carriers at the Baker City post office that has delayed delivery this summer.

The agency has eight new employees for the Baker City office who are finishing their training, said Kim Frum, a strategic communications specialist for the Postal Service.

Frum said previously that a July 27 job fair in Baker City yielded 14 applicants. She said the agency wanted to hire at least 10 new employees, including carriers, mail handlers and clerks, at the local post office.

That was one of 37 job fairs the Postal Service had across Oregon that day. The agency is dealing with worker shortages in other parts of the state and in other states.

The Postal Service has scheduled another round of job fairs across Oregon in September, including one at the Baker City post office, in the David J. Wheeler Federal Building, 1550 Dewey Ave., on Thursday, Sept. 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.
