Male inmate dies at Baker County Jail

A male inmate died in the Baker County Jail on Saturday morning, Aug. 19, according to a press release from Baker County District Attorney Greg Baxter.

The release did not name the inmate, although Baxter said on Monday morning, Aug. 21, that the man is not from Baker County. No foul play is suspected, Baxter said.
Oregon State Police is leading the investigation by the Baker County Major Crime Team, which also includes representatives from the Baker City Police and the district attorney’s office.
Baxter said an autopsy was planned, potentially on Monday.

The inmate was found unresponsive in his cell, Baxter said. Corrections deputies started life-saving measures, and paramedics were called. The inmate was declared deceased by the Baker County medical examiner.
According to the 911 dispatch log, a call for an ambulance at the jail was made at 6:35 a.m. on Saturday.
