If you and your pet are itching to get out and explore the great outdoors, there’s nothing better than taking a hiking trip together. But you’re not limited to your own neck of the woods. There are amazing hiking destinations all over the country, and unique, pet-friendly places to stay that turn a good trip into an incredible experience and a lasting memory. We’ve rounded up some of the best pet-friendly hiking getaways, listed in no particular order, to help you plan a paw-fect vacation in the Great Outdoors.

Sky Rock Sedona

Sedona, AZ

Sky Rock Sedona is a perfect place for people and pups who love exploring the unique majesty and beauty of the American Southwest. The most impressive thing about Sky Rock may just be the views: hotel rooms feature four-terraced promenade decks, allowing you and your pet to enjoy panoramic views of the Red Rocks of Sedona. Sky Rock also offers a central location to numerous pet-friendly hiking trails, including Devil’s Bridge and Schnebly Hill Vista Overlook, as well as concierge service, room service, and a 37-inch TV, so after a long day of hiking, you and your pooch can settle in and relax without a care in the world.  

Hiking can be enjoyed in every season in Sedona, and there are many places to find pet-friendly hiking trails, including the Coconino National Forest, Red Rock Secret Mountain Wilderness, and Munds Mountain Wilderness. But beyond hiking, the city of Sedona is a playground for pets, featuring numerous pet-friendly breweries, wineries, and restaurants, a large dog park, and unique activities like Jeep tours, trolley tours, and arts and crafts sessions.

Sky Rock welcomes up to two pets per room, and charges a per-day pet fee. The hotel really does love pets: a portion of the fee is donated to the Humane Society of Sedona.

3 B’s Inn Bed Breakfast, and Biscuits

Gerton, NC

It would be hard to find accommodations more pet-friendly than 3 B’s Inn Bed, Breakfast, and Biscuits. In fact, if you don’t bring a dog with you, they’ll turn you away! Tucked in the famously scenic North Carolina Blue Ridge Mountains, and close to Chimney Rock and Lake Lure, this charming and cozy Gerton inn features only nine accommodations, with gated access for added privacy and security.

Dog beds and bowls are provided in each room, but that’s just the beginning. There are private dog cabins, a spring-fed swimming pond for your pooch to enjoy, and a fully-fenced, on-premises doggie play area! You can even hike with your pup without ever leaving the inn–the five-acre property features wooded trails perfect for exploring together.

There are any number of great pet-friendly hiking trails in and around nearby Asheville. Asheville Hiking Tours offers guided pet-friendly area hikes, but if you’d like to go it alone, there’s Carolina Mountain Trail, Craggy Gardens, and of course, Chimney Rock State Park. The city of Asheville itself is famously pet-friendly, with numerous wineries, breweries, restaurants, and shops that will welcome your pooch. You can even take him on a ghost tour, or to an outdoor theater production, or to an antique car museum.    

3Bs allows up to two pets, with no breed or weight restrictions, and they stay for free! That said, if you want to bring more than two pets, fees may apply.

Enchanted Mountain Retreats

Blairsville, GA

Looking for spectacular mountain scenery, great hiking trails, mild weather, and a cozy and beautiful place to stay with your furkid? Consider Enchanted Mountain Retreats. This vacation rental company offers a variety of cabin rentals in the North Georgia Mountains , and they are sure to have the perfect place for you. Cabins are impeccably clean, welcoming, and comfortable, and feature easy access to nearby hiking trails. Some properties feature fenced-in yards perfect for pooches.

Some of the area’s best pet-friendly hiking can be found at in the Blairsville area. Vogel State Park, one of Georgia’s oldest state parks, sits at the base of Blood Mountain in the Chattahoochee National Forest, and features pet-friendly trails with incredible scenery. In addition, pets are welcome to hike on Brasstown Bald Mountain, the site of Georgia’s highest peak. There are numerous other pet-friendly trails and nature walks in the area, but you can also take your pooch on a river tubing adventure, or a winery tour, or head out together for a round of mini-golf in nearby Helen.

Enchanted Mountain Retreats allows one dog of up to 40 pounds to stay for free, but does charge a fee for additional dogs.

Hampton Inn Gatlinburg Historic Nature Trail

 Gatlinburg, TN

Located less than a mile from the majestic Great Smoky Mountains National Park, and walking distance from the quaint, but lively scene in downtown Gatlinburg, Hampton Inn Gatlinburg is a comfortable, affordable option that offers easy access to pet-friendly hiking trails, and features 24/7 front desk service, concierge service, and complimentary breakfast that you can enjoy in your room, so you can spend your downtown staying in and relaxing.  

There are two pet-friendly hiking trails in the Great Smoky Mountains National Park: the Gatlinburg trail, and the Oconaluftee River Trail. You can also visit nearby pet-friendly parks like Foxfire Mountain Adventure Park and Seven Islands State Birding Park. In addition to hiking, Gatlinburg offers plenty of fun, pet-friendly things to do. Take your pet on a ghost tour, or visit a moonshine distillery together. Or, head out for a river tubing adventure.

Hampton Inn Gatlinburg welcomes both cats and dogs. The hotel allows up to two pets per room, with a 75-pound weight restriction, and has a per-stay fee for visits of 1-4 nights.

Tamarack Lodge

Mammoth Lakes, CA

Set on the shore of Twin Lakes, Tamarack Lodge offers guests the classic cozy mountain getaway they dream of, with modern conveniences and easy access to hiking trails and outdoor adventures. Built in 1924, this historic Mammoth Lakes lodge provides a fireplace and a kitchen in each room, so you can dine it with your pet by the fire.

You and your pooch can explore Convict Lake, Sherwin Lakes Trailhead, or the Sierra National Forest. But you can also visit the Devil’s Postpile National Monument or the Mammoth Mountain Adventure Center. Or, take a breathtaking ride through the mountains with Mammoth Mountain Scenic Gondola.

Up to two pets–dogs only–are allowed at Tamarack Lodge. The lodge does charge a per-night pet fee and requires a pet deposit, and there is a weight limit of 100 pounds. Pets are not allowed unattended in rooms. A designated pet potty area is available for pet guests.

Crowne Plaza Lake Placid

Lake Placid, NY

Nestled near the exquisite Adirondacks, in the charming village setting of Lake Placid, Crowne Plaza Lake Placid offers a tranquil mountain getaway for people and their pooches. The hotel overlooks Lake Mirror, and is just moments from hiking and other outdoor adventures. It also features stunning mountain views, a private beach you and your pet can explore, and a fireplace you can cuddle in front of.

The incredible scenery in Lake Placid is best viewed up close and personal. Hike pet-friendly areas like Peninsula Nature Trails, Whiteface Mountain, Cascade Mountain, or John Brown Farm, or take a walk around Mirror Lake. You can also explore the town with your pooch; Lake Placid is one of the pet-friendliest places in the country–it’s even rumored that dogs outnumber people. Take your furkid out for ice cream, or on a boat ride, or to a pet-friendly bookshop.

Crowne Plaza welcomes up to 2 dogs with no pet weight limit. There is a per-night pet fee.
