ELGIN — A pair of Elgin residents could face charges after an early morning altercation last month in Elgin.
According to a press release from the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Elgin Mayor Stanley “James” Johnson was cited in lieu of arrest for fourth-degree assault and disorderly conduct for his role in a fight at Elgin Station Bar and Grill, 52 N. Eighth St., on July 28. Johnson was elected mayor in November 2022 with 60.8% of votes. He was sworn into office in January.
Law enforcement said shortly before 1 a.m. Union County Sheriff’s Office deputies were dispatched to a report of an ongoing fight at the downtown bar. Dispatch informed deputies there was one man who was unconscious and the other party involved in the fight had left.
Upon arriving at the restaurant, deputies found one male — later identified as Johnson — intoxicated and injured from the altercation, law enforcement said. Deputies were approached by Kayla Laber, of Elgin, who told them she also was involved in the incident.
Deputies conducted interviews and investigated the incident and charges were filed against Johnson on July 28. Laber was also cited in lieu of lodging for disorderly conduct.
Johnson told The Observer he did not wish to make a comment without first speaking with an attorney.
The case has now been forwarded to the Union County District Attorney’s Office for review.
