This black bear (its coat is a lighter color, common to bears in Hells Canyon) had been living near the Pittsburg Campground, on the Idaho side of the canyon, for several months. The bear's continuing presence prompted the U.S. Forest Service to close the Pittsburg Campground on June 28, 2023. due to concerns about possible conflicts between campers and the bear. The campground reopened July 14, as the bear has been staying away from people.

JOSEPH — The U.S. Forest Service has temporarily closed the Pittsburg Campground in Hells Canyon due to an adult black bear that has been living in the area over the past several months.

The intent of the temporary closure is to reduce potential contacts between the bear and visitors, according to a press release. The Pittsburg boat launch and Snake River trailhead will remain open for visitors. The campground is on the Idaho side of the Snake River.

“We’ve gotten reports of coolers being raided, as well as interactions with this bear at very close range with visitors”, said Sweyn Wall, recreation manager for the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area.

Idaho Fish and Game is working with Forest Service officials to trap the bear. Wildlife biologists with both the Forest Service and Idaho Fish and Game have recommended closure of the campground until the bear leaves or is removed.

“The timing is unfortunate with the holiday weekend and our peak boating season here, but visitor safety is our highest priority,” said Jamey Basye, deputy district ranger for the Forest Service.

Visitors to the area should maintain awareness of their surroundings and secure food, trash and other odorous items in bear-resistant containers or vehicles.

An update will be released as soon as more information is available. For additional information, call the Hells Canyon National Recreation Area office in Riggins, Idaho, at 208-628-3916.
