Letter to the editor for June 29, 2023

My letter is in support of Mayor Matt Diaz. In his response, he has said, “He was only trying to give an illustration” of how this new wokeness problem has gotten out of control. As many of you know, we all have the same equal rights of expression, whether in speech or a written word. Matt was stating his thoughts on a private Facebook page and was not taking a stance as a city leader. He was elected with the most votes during the election and he is simply trying, as a volunteer in this position, to do his best and navigate through the process.

No one has the right to condemn him or attempt to get him removed from office. The demonstrators were exercising the same rights, but no one is calling for them to be fired from their jobs or positions. This type of attitude is not good for Baker County. In my 51 years of standing alongside citizens of this great community, I have experienced the most caring and loving people who always put the needs of others first. Matt, along with many other people, has provided free meals, leadership with our youth and families, and selfishly served the citizens of our community.

My point is, we don’t need this divisiveness in Baker County. I suggest we put this matter to rest and move on.
