We are fairly new to Baker. We moved here two years ago after living in Central Oregon for 16 years.

We chose Baker to be close to our son and his young family. They have good jobs and the town appeared classic and inviting. Even after exploring the downtown and finding most businesses closed, we still decided to retire here and establish a new life while being supportive to the kids. There are things we love about Baker: Geiser-Pollman Park, the Leo Adler walkway, the library, local businesses that we patronize, excellent service providers (dentists, accountants, car repair) and Anthony Lakes Ski Area. However, we are greatly disappointed to learn how critical infrastructure services are being reduced or eliminated. First there was the reduction in ambulance and fire station staff; then the hospital eliminated the intensive care unit; and now the hospital birthing center is closing!

We are astounded that a city the size of Baker cannot find a way to provide essential services in a manner that attracts and supports new young residents. We know one young family that planned to move here but his future as an EMT was not secure, so he accepted a position elsewhere. Young people are the promise of a thriving future in small towns and Baker has pulled away the welcome mat. As retirees we also feel that the necessary support is lacking. We don’t mind driving to Boise for a flight but to drive to La Grande or Boise for potential emergency care is daunting. The closing of the birthing center hit me the hardest. How can we expect young families to raise their children here if there is no place to have their babies? Our weather frequently prohibits long drives, let alone in emergency situations. If more local funding is needed to attract and retain these services, let’s do what is required. Baker should be a thriving community with a variety of age groups and local services to support them. We don’t have to grow at the rate of Central Oregon, but we do need to maintain a healthy community.
