All-terrain vehicle riders will gather in Sumpter over Memorial Day weekend for a variety of events.

SUMPTER — The crowds congregating in Sumpter this weekend for the town’s annual Memorial Day flea market will include well over 100 all-terrain vehicle enthusiasts.

The Sumpter Valley ATV Association’s third-annual Memorial Day weekend rally includes a variety of events in and around Sumpter, which is about 28 miles west of Baker City via Highway 7.

Headquarters is the Whistle Stop RV Park, at the south end of Sumpter beside the Powder River.

Pre-event sales for raffle tickets, at $5 each, and for a $25 tri-tip dinner on Sunday, May 28, will start on Friday, May 26 at the RV park, 191 Sawmill Gulch Road. Riders can buy a $10 bracelet, which is required for rally events.

On Saturday, May 27 at 9 a.m., riders will gather at the RV park for a ride to Austin Junction, where a pulled pork sandwich lunch will be available for $10. The round trip will be about 50 miles.

Jon Patterson, who owns the RV park, said on Wednesday, May 24 that 120 riders had already signed up for Saturday’s ride, and he’s expecting about 150 in total.

On Saturday night riders can gather at Patterson’s shop, 409 Magnolia Ave., for a light parade through downtown starting around 9 p.m.

On Sunday a poker run, at $10 per card with a 50% payout, will start at noon at the RV park. The tri-tip dinner will start at 6 p.m. at Patterson’s shop, followed by raffle drawings and poker run awards at 7 p.m.

Patterson urges participants to ride slowly in town, for safety and to keep the dust down.
