ONTARIO — The Oregon Department of Transportation continues to monitor an active but slow-moving landslide adjacent to the eastbound lanes of Interstate 84 about 17 miles northwest of Ontario.

The slide, near the top of Threemile Hill (Milepost 359.3), has created a crescent-shape depression about 200 yards long, 100 yards wide and 30 feet deep.

The slide has been moving about one inch per day, but ODOT officials say the movement could speed up at any time.

“The slide appears to be contained within the limits of a previously repaired landslide,” said Jeff Berry, assistant director for ODOT’s District 14.

Officials discovered the slide in early February after snow melted. The slide likely started earlier in the winter.

Were the slide to worsen, rocks and debris could cover the eastbound lanes and potentially even the westbound lanes.

ODOT crews have tried to stabilize the eastbound shoulder of the freeway. ODOT recommends drivers use extra caution in the area and prepare for potential delays and detours.
