Club 24 doubles gym space in expansion

Club 24 Fitness more than doubled its footprint when it recently expanded next door into what was formerly Lefty’s Taphouse, 1924 Broadway St.

The new side opened to members about a month ago.

“It’s mostly new weight equipment,” said Amy VanGaasbeck, who has managed the club for five years.

One area in the remodeled space has been outfitted with elevated and padded platforms designed for deadlift weight exercises.

“It protects the floor,” VanGaasbeck said.

The expansion also brought new machines, in addition to the existing cardio and free weight areas.

In addition, the upstairs is available to rent for events or to hold special classes.

She said no major structural work was needed to change the space from a pub into a fitness center — other than removing the former pizza oven and beer taps.

“We did do a lot of painting and added flooring,” she said.

A future addition will be two infrared saunas.

As the name implies, the fitness club is accessible 24 hours a day. The “members only” door is always locked and can be opened with the Club 24 app or a card issued from the club.

“There aren’t a lot of people who work out in the middle of the night, but some people do,” VanGaasbeck said.

One door — on the left, if you’re facing the building — will be open during staffed hours, which are 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. this week.

In March, regular hours will be Monday and Wednesday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. and 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., Tuesday and Thursday from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m., and Friday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Open house

To celebrate the expansion, Club 24 will have an open house from Feb. 27 to March 2 when community members can try out the gym from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. (check in at the front desk first).

VanGaasbeck said staff will be handing out prizes and the joining fee will be reduced during that week if people decide to join.

History

Club 24 opened the Baker City gym in 2017. There are 11 locations in Washington and Oregon.

A new club is opening in La Grande this spring in the downtown building formerly occupied by JCPenney on Adams Avenue.
