A fire that destroyed a south Baker City home Sunday night has been deemed accidental, Fire Chief John Clark said Tuesday.
The cause will remain undetermined, he said.
The single story house at 2251 Mitchell St., built in 1910, was a total loss. The house and property were valued at $23,820, according to Baker County Assessor’s Office records.
The house was vacant but transients reportedly had been living there, Clark said.
The house has been condemned and the city has an order to tear it down within the next 30 days. It might take longer, however, Clark said.
The registered property owner, Mitchelle D. Sergerdahl, died in September 2018. Clark said the challenge to removing what remains of the house will be in finding the person who is the heir to the property.
The fire was reported about 6:20 p.m. Sunday. When firefighters arrived they found fire burning through the roof of the house.
One firefighter sustained heat exhaustion and was treated and released, Clark said. There were no other injuries.
Mutual aid was provided by members of Baker Rural, Haines and Bowen Valley fire protection districts. The Baker City Police Department, the Baker County Sheriff’s Office, Baker County Dispatch and Baker City Public Works employees also helped.
