Melissa Davis of Baker County will represent the Oregon Quarter Horse Association in the Miss Rodeo Oregon contest to be held in Vale July 4 and 5. Miss Davis was a princess of the Pendleton Round-Up court last year. She will join Barbara Townley of Vale, the Blue Mountain Quarter Horse represerntative, in competition at the contest.

LA GRANDE — Andy Kerr says his Oregon Natural Resources Council does not like the Clinton forest plan, but is glad it pushed to get it enacted.

The new ONRC executive director told environmentalists at a rally in La Grande that the Clinton plan would result in a 93 percent reduction in a historically excessive timber cut.

“I’m running in circles. I’m running out of money and it’s getting worse,” said Jim Lunders, manager of the vector control district.

Thunderstorms that dumped more than an inch of rain in parts of Baker County Wednesday evening caused mudslides that clogged culverts, coated roads with debris and caused new damage at a pair of Forest Service campgrounds near Unity that had only recently reopened after a flash flood roared through them in September 2017.

The Stevens Creek and Elk Creek campgrounds along the South Fork of the Burnt River are closed.

Forest Service engineers are worried about the potential for trees to fall in the two campgrounds, said Katy Gray, public information officer for the Wallowa-Whitman National Forest.

The main road up the South Fork drainage, Forest Road 6005, was washed out about a mile above its junction with Road 6015, and forest officials recommend people avoid the entire area, Gray said.
