SUMPTER — Rod Dickison, the retired Baker City barber, remembers working on the Sumpter Valley Dredge.

So does his brother, Wilson or “Willie,” also of Baker City.

They were among a dozen former dredge employees honored Sunday at the first Sumpter Valley Dredge reunion.

Expect your index finger to receive more of a workout staring July 12, when people who live in the 541 area code region should begin to dial 10 digits — even when placing local calls.

But if your trained dialing finger slips up and forgets to hit the additional three digits of the area code, you’re not in any trouble and your call will still be completed.

The Oregon Public Utility Commission has instituted a grace period from July 12 to Jan. 10, 2010, when dialing all digits will become mandatory.

The Wallowa-Whitman National Forest plans to rebuild a nearly mile-long section of a mountain road near Unity that was severely damaged during a flash flood in September 2017 and remains impassable.

Floodwaters filled the channel of a seasonal tributary of Spring Creek, which flows into the South Fork of the Burnt River, breached the creek’s banks and poured onto a section of Forest Road 6015, according to a Wallowa-Whitman report.

The water eroded the road bed so that it’s now lower than the creek channel, making it vulnerable to future flooding.

According to the Wallowa-Whitman report, “this will continue to erode this portion of the 6015 road for several years to come.”
