Baker will become host city for 41 foreign exchange students Saturday, June 21, when they make a “bus stop” here on their way to Washington, D.C.
The students, who are members of the American Field Service foreign exchange program, have just spent a full year living in American cities.

A Burger King franchise will open in Baker City this summer, probably by the end of July.
The restaurant will be owned by Don Waldrop of Waldrop Oil Co. in La Grande and managed by his daughter, Shelly Dall, and be located at the Baker City Conoco service station on Campbell Street just east of the freeway.

How many miles of roads will be closed to motorized vehicles when Wallowa-Whitman National Forest Supervisor Steve Ellis reveals his preferred strategy for the forest’s Travel Management Plan?
The official June 19 release of the Draft Environmental Impact Statement won’t tip Ellis’ hand, but we do know that two of the six alternatives, although they’re analyzed in the almost 600-page document, are off the table.

It’s a pilgrimage of sorts, when owners of Airstream trailers arrive in Baker City.
Wally Byam, the inventor of the Airstream, was born in Baker. Although he didn’t spend his entire childhood here, Byam and his contribution to the recreation industry is honored in an exhibit at the Baker Heritage Museum.
This week, 23 Airstreams will set up camp at Mountain View RV Park in Baker City. These are part of the Vintage Airstream Club, which is an intraclub of the Wally Byam Caravan Club International.
Dal Smilie and his wife Jane live in Helena, Montana. They arrived in Baker City Monday night in a 1948 Studebaker pickup pulling a 1946 Model 1 Curtis Wright.
Byam went into business with Curtis Wright after World War II through 1947. Smilie calls his trailer a “Wally cousin.”
