For Ray Smith of Baker City, D-Day was June 5, 1944, not June 6.

Just before midnight and the start of what would later be called “The Longest Day,” Smith, then a 27-year-old paratrooper, jumped with about 20 others from a C-47 airplane over Northwestern France. His and the other Allied planes were identified by three stripes on the wings and fuselage, he remembers, eyes wandering away for a moment to find the 50-year-old memory.

Some of Baker City’s oldest, or at least most decrepit, sewer pipes are getting a face-lift this month.

Except the new face, so to speak, is on the inside of the pipe rather than the outside.

Not that either side of a sewer pipe is especially attractive anyway.

The process is called “cured in place pipe lining,” and the city’s public works department has been using it for a decade to extend the life of pipes and to avoid having to dig them up and replace them, a costly task that also tears up streets.

The city’s contractor — PEC Corporation of Helena, Montana, has been the low bidder for the past few years, including 2018 — installs a resin-impregnated felt liner inside existing pipes, said Tom Fisk, operations supervisor for the public works department.
