The Class of 1994 said good-bye to Baker High School Sunday under skies that were as varied as the paths each of the 135 graduates will choose.
Dark clouds occasionally blocked the sun, and wind gusts nearly blew the mortarboards prematurely from many heads.

A dozen Union Pacific freight train cars were strewn along Highway 30 in an early morning derailment that is expected to interrupt or curtail traffic between Baker City and Haines, possibly for days, while the wreckage is cleared.
Railroad investigators were at the scene about a mile and a half south of Haines working to determine what caused the derailment, said Jerry Boyd, Baker County 911 Dispatch Center director.

The Baker School District’s Budget Board spent two hours reviewing a proposed 2018-19 budget that shows a $6 million General Fund spending increase, from $31,959,513 to $38,023,626, for the coming year.
After hearing Superintendent Mark Witty’s budget message and reviewing “strategic investments” made this year and “identified priorities” for next year, the group agreed to meet again on June 5. That meeting will begin at 5 p.m. at the District Office, 2090 Fourth St.
Rosemary Abell, who is a community representative on the 10-member Board, was elected chairwoman. The first Budget Board meeting originally had been set for May 22, but was canceled for lack of a quorum because of scheduling conflicts
Others attending Tuesday’s session were 5J directors Chris Hawkins, Katie Lamb and Julie Huntington; and community members Josey Gaslin and Linda Cyr.
