Baker swept both the boys and girls team championships at the Class 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 4 tennis tournament Saturday at Kennewick.
“The last time both teams won the titles was in 2003,” said Baker coach Kristin Schwin.
In sweeping the team crowns, Baker will send a school record eight players to the state tournament Friday and Saturday at Oregon State University in Corvallis.
“We don’t have all the records from way back, but as far as we can determine this is the most players we’ve sent to state in one year,” Schwin said. “We’re super proud of the kids’ play.”
Zach Schwin defended his district title in boys singles. Schwin lost just four games during the weekend.
Both the boys and girls No. 1 doubles teams — Luke Barnes and Isaac Nemec, and Emma Finley and Kaylee Dalke — finished second, losing to Vale in the title matches.
Shane Cunningham placed third in boys singles.
“Shane played the longest match of the day, almost 3.5 hours,” Schwin said.
In girls singles, Hannah Johnson and Gabbie Trebilcock advanced to state after placing third and fourth. The two Bulldogs played each other in the third-place match with Johnson winning. It was the second straight year Trebilcock advanced to state as a fourth-place finisher.
