A 9-percent drop in manufacturing employment in Baker County stems largely from layoffs of 47 workers representing half the work force at Behlen Mfg. in Baker City.
“We’ve laid off 50 percent. We are down drastically,” said Clint Morrison, Behlen plant manager.
Prior to the layoffs that have taken place gradually over the past six months, Morrison said the plant in Baker City employed just under 100 people.

A rural fire district in Baker County put a new piece of equipment into service last week.
A 2008 Freightliner six-wheel-drive semi truck that has been converted to a multi-purpose tender joined the Greater Bowen Valley Fire Protection District’s rescue and firefighting fleet, which includes two brush engines, two structure engines and a rescue vehicle.
Fire Chief Chris Galiszewski said the truck was acquired in late 2016. It was formerly used by the military to haul equipment and came to the fire district through a government surplus program in late 2016.
