A well-known and respected Baker couple, Mr. and Mrs. Gene Rose, and their family left the city yesterday to take up residence in Ontario. Rose, an attorney, will be associated with the law firm of Yturri, O’Kief, Rose and Burgham in that city.

Baker rolled to an early 8-0 lead, then clicked on all cylinders on the way to a 58-33 victory in the Baker gym.

A $200,000 federal grant is designed to reduce the abuse of prescription opioids in Baker County and three other Eastern Oregon counties over the next two years.

The Oregon Health Authority applied for the grant for Baker, Union, Malheur and Umatilla counties, said Mike Stensrud, who is coordinating the project from his office at the Umatilla County Health Department.

“Mostly what we’re trying to do is increase public awareness of the problem that’s going on,” Stensrud said.

The campaign will include, among other things, community forums and media interviews, he said.

Data from the Oregon Health Authority suggest the opioid problem is greater, statistically speaking, in the four-county region compared with the statewide average.
