Calling attention to this observance, John C. Hesketh, County Extension agent, points out that agriculture is Baker County’s second ranking industry, exceeded only by timber.

SHERWOOD — Unranked Sherwood continued to play the role of giant killer Saturday at the OSAA/U.S. Bank Class 3A state football semifinals.

The Bowmen, who defeated top-ranked Bandon in the quarterfinals, stopped second-ranked Baker 35-6 Saturday to advance to the Class 3A championship game. Sherwood will play Junction City, a 35-6 winner at The Dalles, in Saturday’s title contest.

Barbara Sidway doesn’t exactly cherish the headline coronating her as the “Queen of Baker City” in the November/December edition of Via magazine published by AAA, but she is thrilled about the notoriety it brings to Baker City’s historic downtown.

The Via article touts the ghostly history of the Geiser Grand Hotel, which had been threatened with demolition before she and her husband, Dwight, bought it and spent $7 million over five years renovating it.

The Baker City office of the Oregon State Police Fish and Wildlife Division is seeking help from the public to identify poachers who illegally killed and wasted three mule deer found on private property off Hunt Mountain Lane over the Thanksgiving weekend.

One buck and two does were killed, an OSP press release stated.

The two does were shot, driven over by a vehicle and left to waste. The buck was shot, its antlers were removed and it also was left to waste.
