Baker County residents honored military veterans with the inaugural Run For Veterans event Saturday morning and the traditional ceremony on Sunday — Veterans Day — at the monument outside the Courthouse that bears the names of local residents who died while serving their country.

Ty Gassin, a 2013 Baker High School graduate who owns a business in Ontario, raised $848 for the Wounded Warrior Project with the Run For Veterans.

The Wounded Warriors Project helps military veterans and their families.

“To be honest I wasn’t expecting that much support,” Gassin said this morning. “It was really good to see everybody get out there and be proud to be an American and support our veterans.”

Participants ran or walked 3 miles from Mount Hope Cemetery to the Sports Complex.

Jennifer and Todd Orr made the largest donation of $250. Although Gassin planned to award a metal American flag to the Orrs, they asked Gassin to use the flag for future events.

He’s planning a second Run For Veterans for 2019.
