The town of 410, located 10 miles north of Baker City, is expanding its park, sprucing up its public works facilities and generally catching the community improvement fever spreading throughout Northeastern Oregon during this, the Oregon’s Trail’s 150th anniversary.

The Baker School District’s management team has spent the past five months looking at the most palatable ways to trim next year’s operating budget, Superintendent Don Ulrey told budget committee members Tuesday night.

Seven of the district’s 10-member budget committee spent three hours acquainting themselves with the proposed 2008-09 general fund budget, which totals $16,959,121. That’s down $106,474 from last year.

Snowflakes were falling thick and fast Saturday morning at Phillips Reservoir, propelled by a west wind that was the antithesis of a mild May breeze.

The gusts whipped the water into waves that rumbled to shore with a thud more typical of a Pacific beach than a mountain lake.

Those waves inundated ground that hasn’t been doused by the reservoir for five years.

The combination of a deep winter snowpack and an abnormally chilly spring that’s slowing the snowmelt has brought Phillips Reservoir, a key source of irrigation water for Baker Valley farms, closer to its capacity than it’s been since May 2012.
