Schwin claims boys singles title at sub-district tourney

Baker’s Zach Schwin claimed the boys singles championship at the Special District 4 sub-district tennis tournament Monday at Nyssa.

Schwin defeated Vale’s Marco Ramirez 6-3, 6-1 in the title match.

Schwin reached the title match by defeating fellow Bulldog Paul Niebauer 6-1, 6-3 in the semifinals.

Niebauer also advances to the Special District district tournament Friday and Saturday at Ontario as the No. 4 singles player from sub-district.

Niebauer lost 7-6 (8-6), 6-1 to Vale’s Kenneth Silva in Monday’s third-place match.

Baker’s boys doubles team of John and Shane Cunningham advances to district as the No. 3 seed.

The Cunninghams lost 7-6 (7-2), 7-6 (10-8) to Vale’s Dan Wenger and Brody Marvin in the semifinals.

In the third-place match, the Cunninghams topped La Grande’s Simon Maille and Deric Mussato 6-3, 6-4.

In girls singles play, Baker’s Gabby Treblecock and Hannah Johnson advance to district as the No. 3 and No. 4 seeds.

Treblecock defeated Johnson 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-4 in the third-place match.

In the semis, Treblecock lost 7-5, 6-3 to Vale’s Tessa McFetridge, and Johnson lost 6-3, 6-0 to Vale’s Sable Kelso.

Baker’s girls doubles team of Emma Finley and Kaylee Dalke advances to district as the No. 4 seed.

Finley and Dalke lost 7-5, 6-2 to Vale’s Allee Ewing and Maycee Delong in the semifinals.

The Baker duo then had to retire in the second set of the third-place match against Ontario’s Emily Jordan and Haleigh Taylor.

District action will begin at 9 a.m. both Friday and Saturday at Ontario.
