Saturday was the poorest opening day for fishing season here for a number of years, reports indicate, mainly due to wind and cold.

Several persons were noted with their limit of ten trout, but some were lucky to take anywhere from three to six for a day’s fishing effort.

The Baker School District 5J Board voted unanimously Tuesday night to rehire the district’s 35 probationary employees.

Superintendent Gary Holmberg told the board he felt confident the latest revenue projections from the state are close to what the final allocations will be.

The probationary employees were notified last month — when the state was predicting as much as an $800,000 cut in the 5J budget — that they might not be rehired.

The Baker County Sheriff’s Office is investigating the death of a transient whose body was found Wednesday washed up along the shore of Brownlee Reservoir about five miles downstream from the Spring Recreation Site.

Sheriff Mitch Southwick said the body of Dale Ingram, 39, was sighted by Robert Brown, 57, of Huntington, while Brown was fishing on Brownlee Reservoir.

The Baker School Board voted unanimously Thursday night to continue to operate under the current four-day student week calendar, subject to change while negotiations with the teachers union continue.

The decision makes it less likely that Superintendent Mark Witty’s proposal to return to a five-day week, with early release for students on Friday, will happen for the 2017-18 school year. He suggested that schedule in February.

Teachers, meanwhile, have proposed either maintaining the four-day week of 174 contract days or adding six additional days to create a 180-day contract under which teachers would be paid at a per day rate for the extra days.
